Why Did Ace Hate Roger in One Piece? Here's the Reason

The relationship between father and son in the One Piece series is always complex and difficult, and that's especially true for Gol D. Roger and Portgas D. Ace. Even though Roger tried to protect Ace by asking Garp for help before Ace was born, Ace still harbored a deep hatred for Roger.

So, why did Ace hate Roger?

1. Being Roger's Son Made Ace Hated and Hunted by the World

Gol D. Roger was known as a dangerous pirate and a "demon" to the general public. Because of this, his reputation and that of his family were terrible. The Marines were even hunting for any of Roger's children.

Due to his father's bad reputation, the world hated and wanted to kill Ace, his son, believing he was just as evil as his father. This is the main reason Ace hated being born the son of the Pirate King.

2. Ace Felt He Owed Roger Nothing

Ace felt he owed his father nothing. According to him, Roger had done nothing for him and had only made his life miserable with his reputation.

Instead, Ace believed that his mother, Portgas D. Rouge, was the one who truly sacrificed everything for his birth. This is also why Ace took the name Portgas D. from his mother instead of Gol D.

3. Despite Hating His Father, Ace Would Beat Up Anyone Who Spoke Ill of Roger

Ace may have despised Roger and felt that his father only made his life difficult. However, if he ever heard someone bad-mouthing Gol D. Roger, Ace would absolutely beat that person up.

It seems that despite his hatred, a father is still a father. Insulting Roger was an insult to his family, including Rouge and Ace himself. This is likely why Ace would get so angry at anyone who disrespected Roger.
