The Meaning Behind Nami’s Tattoo in One Piece

Hey Nakama! You’re probably familiar with Nami, one of the main characters from the One Piece franchise. Known for her beauty and cleverness, Nami also has a tattoo on her body that carries deep meaning.

Nami often wears an orange T-shirt and skirt. She has a sawfish tattoo, which was once a mark showing that she belonged to the Arlong Pirates.

But the story behind Nami’s tattoo has a long and emotional history in the world created by Eiichiro Oda. It all started with her adoptive mother, Bell-mère, who became one of the victims of Arlong’s massacre.

After Arlong arrived on Cocoyashi Village, the villagers lived in constant fear and suffering.

To survive, they were forced to pay monthly fees: 100,000 Berries for adults and 50,000 for children. That’s why the orange-haired girl ended up joining the Arlong Pirates—to save the people of Cocoyashi Village, her birthplace and hometown.

Eventually, after Luffy and the Straw Hat crew defeated Arlong and saved her, Nami officially joined Luffy as the navigator of the Straw Hat Pirates.

Her current tattoo carries new meaning. It features a mikan (tangerine), which symbolizes her connection to Bell-mère, who grew tangerines at her home. It also includes a windmill symbol hanging from the mikan, representing Genzo, the sheriff of Cocoyashi Village.

When she was a child, Nami would often cry when seeing Genzo, because of his stern and intimidating face. To make her smile, Genzo attached a little windmill to his hat, hoping it would cheer her up.
