Spoiler
Warning: This article contains spoilers from the Sabaody
Archipelago and later One Piece storylines.
One
Piece has introduced dozens of villains and antagonists, but Saint
Charlos is one character who repeatedly appears in discussions about the
series' most hated figures.
There
is no official worldwide poll that definitively establishes a single “most
hated” One Piece character. However, Saint Charlos consistently appears
at or near the top of fan-oriented lists and discussions. IDN Times named him
first in a 2022 list of the most disliked One Piece characters, while a
2026 article again placed him first in a list of villains that fans strongly
dislike. Duniaku has also used Charlos as the lead candidate in a reader poll
asking which One Piece enemy fans hate most.
So, why
does Charlos provoke such a strong reaction?
Who Is
Saint Charlos?
Saint
Charlos is a member of the World Nobles, also known as the Celestial Dragons.
He is
the son of Saint Rosward and the older brother of Saint Shalria. His status as
a Celestial Dragon gives him enormous privilege within the World Government's
social hierarchy.
But
what makes Charlos particularly hated isn't simply that he is a member of the
World Nobles.
It is how
he uses that privilege.
Charlos
Treats Other People as Property
Charlos
is portrayed as someone who believes ordinary people exist for his use.
Fan-oriented
coverage repeatedly points to his treatment of humans as slaves as one of the
main reasons viewers dislike him. IDN Times describes him as treating other
people's lives as worthless and notes that he repeatedly abuses slaves without
showing remorse.
This
behavior is especially disturbing because Charlos doesn't appear to regard his
actions as morally questionable.
To
him, his position as a World Noble effectively places him above ordinary
consequences.
That
attitude makes him very different from villains whose motives are based on
revenge, ambition, or a larger ideology.
Charlos
simply believes he is entitled to control other people.
The
Sabaody Archipelago Incident
Charlos'
most infamous appearance takes place during the Sabaody Archipelago Arc.
The
Straw Hats encounter the Celestial Dragon while visiting the human auction
house and surrounding area.
Charlos'
behavior toward the people around him demonstrates the enormous power imbalance
created by the World Nobles' status.
He
treats human beings as commodities and acts with almost complete impunity.
The
situation becomes even worse when Hatchan (Hachi) is injured after being
targeted by Charlos.
According
to fan-oriented summaries, Charlos reacts without remorse, treating the
shooting almost like a game.
The
Punch That Fans Remember
Then
comes one of the most memorable moments in One Piece.
Monkey
D. Luffy punches Saint Charlos.
The
moment has become iconic because Luffy is normally willing to tolerate strange
behavior, insults, and even dangerous opponents without immediately losing
control.
But
Charlos crosses a line.
Luffy's
punch is therefore more than a physical attack.
It is
the Straw Hat captain openly rejecting the idea that Charlos' status gives him
the right to hurt other people.
This
is why the scene is frequently described by fans as one of the most satisfying
moments in the series. IDN Times specifically highlights Luffy's punch as a
particularly satisfying payoff to Charlos' behavior.
Why
Fans Hate Charlos More Than Many Villains
There
are many One Piece villains who have committed terrible acts.
So why
does Charlos generate such a distinctive reaction?
One
reason is the absence of a sympathetic explanation.
Characters
such as Doflamingo, Arlong, or Crocodile have detailed backgrounds and personal
motivations that help explain how they became antagonists.
Charlos
is presented differently.
His
behavior is largely driven by privilege, arrogance, selfishness, and a complete
disregard for other people's humanity.
A 2025
Duniaku list similarly describes Charlos as an arrogant Celestial Dragon who
enslaves civilians and treats other races with contempt.
That
makes him an unusually straightforward character to dislike.
Charlos
Represents the Worst Side of the Celestial Dragons
Charlos
is also important because he embodies the darker side of the World Nobles.
The
Celestial Dragons occupy the highest social position in the World Government's
system.
They
live above ordinary laws and receive extraordinary protection.
Charlos
takes advantage of that system to the extreme.
His
character therefore represents more than individual cruelty.
He is
also a symbol of a corrupt social hierarchy in which power determines whose
life is valued.
This
is why his presence in Sabaody is so important to the story.
Luffy
isn't simply fighting one obnoxious noble.
He is
reacting to a system that permits people like Charlos to behave however they
want.
The
Difference Between “Hated” and “Well-Written”
Interestingly,
saying that Charlos is hated by fans does not mean the character is poorly
written.
Those
are two different things.
A
villain can be extremely well-written precisely because the audience strongly
dislikes what the character represents.
Charlos
succeeds at provoking that reaction.
Fans
are not necessarily supposed to admire him.
They
are supposed to see the injustice surrounding him and understand why characters
such as Luffy refuse to accept it.
His
role is therefore closely connected to one of One Piece's recurring
themes:
freedom
versus oppression.
Has
Charlos Changed?
Despite
the passage of time, Charlos has remained essentially the same type of
character.
His
importance has expanded because the Final Saga has increasingly focused on:
- The Celestial Dragons
- Imu
- The World Government
- The Revolutionary Army
- The history of the Void Century
As
those elements become more important, characters like Charlos represent the
ordinary face of the larger system that the protagonists oppose.
He may
not be the strongest enemy Luffy has faced.
But
strength was never what made him memorable.
The
Symbolism of Luffy’s Punch
The
punch has become one of One Piece's most iconic scenes for a reason.
Luffy
isn't interested in social rank.
He
doesn't care that Charlos is a World Noble.
When
Charlos hurts someone Luffy cares about, Luffy responds exactly as he would
against anyone else.
In
that moment, the title of “Celestial Dragon” means nothing.
That
is what makes the scene so powerful.
Luffy
treats everyone equally—while Charlos believes certain people exist beneath
him.
The
contrast between them is one of the clearest expressions of Luffy's worldview.
Final
Thoughts
Saint
Charlos is one of the most consistently hated characters in the One Piece
fandom.
Fan
lists and discussions repeatedly single him out because of his cruelty,
slavery, arrogance, and disregard for the lives of ordinary people. A 2022 IDN
Times list placed Charlos first among its most disliked characters, and a 2026
fan-focused villain list again put him at the top. Duniaku has also presented
Charlos as the lead candidate in a fan poll about the most hated One Piece
enemy.
His
most memorable moment remains the Luffy punch at Sabaody.
The
scene works because it represents much more than a fight.
It is
a direct rejection of a system where wealth, bloodline, and political power are
used to justify cruelty.
And
that may be the biggest reason Saint Charlos has remained so easy for One
Piece fans to hate:
he
represents everything Luffy refuses to become.
