Franky is a carpenter or more precisely a shipwright. His expertise is able to make/repair ships and even make weapons. Franky was recruited by Luffy when he was in the Water Seven Arc.

Franky has a modified body that looks like a robot. And his fighting style utilizes various modified elements from his body such as missiles, destructive lasers (beams).

Initially Luffy hated Franky because his men beat Usopp but because he helped save Robin, Luffy recruited him especially since there were no shipwrights in the Straw Hat Pirate crew.
