Reasons Why Eiichiro Oda Chooses to Draw One Piece Manga Manually Instead of Digitally

One Piece

One Piece manga was hailed as the most popular Japanese comic throughout 2023, successfully amassing the largest fan base globally. Throughout his career as a mangaka, Eiichiro Oda has consistently opted to draw his manga manually rather than digitally. Why?

During a question-and-answer interview with fans scattered across the One Piece Fandom, Oda was asked by his Nakama (fans) why, for the past 26 years, and despite creating magazine covers and posters, he continues to draw manually with ink on paper. Why not consider transitioning to digital?

Eiichiro Oda admitted that in the present time, many mangakas do draw digitally. "And it's not that I'm not interested," Oda expressed.

"But for certain reasons, readers perceive this work as somewhat profound. I enjoy the process of drawing with my hands, and I hope to continue using the manual method as long as One Piece continues," Eiichiro Oda continued optimistically.

Throughout his journey, Eiichiro Oda confessed to sleeping only 3 hours each day when morning comes. Due to this unhealthy lifestyle, he realized that his fans were concerned about his lack of sleep.

In another interview, he admitted not being too fond of sleeping. "Sleeping is just a waste of time for me," said Eiichiro Oda.

One Piece manga, serialized in the weekly Shonen Jump magazine since July 22, 1997, is the most anticipated shonen series. The One Piece series has been compiled into tankobon volumes until March 2023. One Piece narrates the adventure of Monkey D. Luffy as he becomes the leader of the Straw Hat Pirates crew and is currently in the Egghead Arc.
